Africa Faces an Existential Climate Crisis

Africa contributes less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions — yet it bears a disproportionate burden of climate change impacts. Prolonged droughts, devastating floods, land degradation, and food insecurity are already reshaping lives across the continent.

Compounding the climate crisis are deep structural inequalities. Women and girls face the sharpest consequences of environmental collapse, yet remain excluded from decision-making. Young people carry the weight of a future they did not create. Communities on the frontlines have the least resources and the loudest voices that go unheard.

The window to act is narrow. The cost of inaction is irreversible.

🌡️

Accelerating Climate Impacts

Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events are destroying livelihoods, displacing communities, and deepening poverty across sub-Saharan Africa.

⚖️

Entrenched Gender Inequality

Women farmers produce 60–80% of Africa's food yet own less than 2% of land. Climate shocks disproportionately push women and girls into crisis and vulnerability.

🔇

Excluded Voices in Policy

Community-level realities rarely inform national or global climate policy. The people most affected are the least heard in decisions that determine their futures.

🧩

Fragmented Solutions

Siloed interventions that address climate or gender or youth separately fail to produce lasting change. Africa needs integrated, community-rooted approaches.

A Community-Rooted, Systems-Change Approach

We don't parachute solutions in from outside. We build alongside communities — using their knowledge, networks, and leadership to drive lasting change.

01

Community-Driven Design

Every program is co-designed with communities. Local knowledge, lived experience, and cultural context shape our interventions from the ground up.

02

Inclusive Participation

Women, youth, and marginalized groups aren't beneficiaries — they're leaders. We invest in their capacity to drive and sustain transformation.

03

Climate-Smart Programming

All our interventions integrate climate adaptation principles — building environmental literacy, sustainable livelihoods, and disaster-resilient systems.

04

Evidence-Based Advocacy

We translate community experience into compelling policy evidence, bridging the gap between local realities and national and global decision-making.

05

Strategic Partnerships

We convene government, civil society, private sector, and development partners to align resources and maximize collective impact at scale.

06

Long-Term Sustainability

We measure success not by activities delivered, but by whether communities can sustain and replicate change independently — building resilience that outlasts our presence.

What We're Building Right Now

From pilot communities in Kenya to a continental advocacy agenda — our work is already underway.

01

📋 Planned 2026

Africa's communities can't wait. Neither can we.

Join us in building a continent that is climate-resilient, gender-equal, and youth-powered.

We Exist Because Communities Deserve Better

Resilient Communities Africa was founded on a simple but urgent conviction: that the people most affected by the climate crisis must be at the center of the solutions. We are not outsiders delivering programs — we are partners building power.

A Non-Political, Non-Profit Organisation Rooted in Africa

Resilient Communities Africa (RCA) is a non-political, non-profit organization dedicated to building climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities across Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, we operate at the intersection of climate action, gender equity, youth leadership, and policy change — because we know these challenges are inseparable.

🎯

Our Vision

A climate-resilient Africa where communities thrive with dignity, equity, and agency — where no one is left behind because of where they live, their gender, or their age.

🌍

Our Mission

To build the capacity, systems, and leadership of African communities to adapt to climate change, champion gender equality, and influence the policies that shape their futures.

The People Behind RCA

A dedicated team of climate justice advocates, community development experts, and strategic leaders.

Maureen Musumi

Executive Director

5+ years experience in climate adaptation and community-led development across East Africa.

Nobert Dickson

Program Director

Shery Kelvin

Policy & Advocacy Lead

Strategic leader in gender-responsive climate policy and advocacy for climate resilience initiatives.

The Principles That Guide Everything We Do

Community Ownership

Real change is driven from within. We facilitate, support, and amplify — but communities lead. Every program is co-created with the people it serves.

Inclusion & Equity

We intentionally prioritize the most marginalized. Women, youth, persons with disabilities, and minority groups are not afterthoughts — they are central to our model.

Integrity & Accountability

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct in all operations, partnerships, and resource management.

Innovation & Learning

We embrace evidence, adapt our approaches, and continuously learn. We apply the best available knowledge to solve Africa's most complex challenges.

Collaboration

We believe in the power of partnership. We forge alliances with government, civil society, the private sector, and global development actors to multiply impact.

Sustainability

Every intervention is designed for longevity. We invest in systems, capacities, and leadership that outlast our programs and grow beyond our direct reach.

The Story Behind RCA

In communities across East and West Africa, we witnessed the same devastating pattern. A grandmother in rural Kenya watches her crops fail for the third consecutive year and wonders how she will feed her grandchildren. A teenage girl in Tanzania drops out of school because her family needs her to walk further and further each day to collect water. A youth leader in Uganda develops an innovative solution to flooding in his community — but has no platform, no funding, and no connection to the policymakers who could scale his idea.

These are not isolated stories. They are the defining crisis of our time — and the collective failure of systems that were never designed with these communities in mind.

Resilient Communities Africa was founded to bridge this gap. Not with charity, but with capacity, voice, and solidarity. We believe that Africa's communities possess the wisdom, creativity, and determination to lead their own transformation — they simply need resources, recognition, and the right partnerships to do so at scale.

This is our work. This is our commitment. This is why we exist.

How We Work

Our methodology is built on four foundational principles that shape every program, partnership, and decision we make.

01

Participatory Design

We conduct deep community consultations before designing any intervention. Programs emerge from lived realities, not assumptions. This ensures relevance, buy-in, and long-term adoption.

02

Radical Inclusion

We apply gender and social inclusion analysis to every program. We track participation disaggregated by gender, age, and social group — and hold ourselves accountable to meaningful inclusion.

03

Systems Change Orientation

We tackle root causes, not just symptoms. Our theory of change connects individual capacity-building to collective action to policy transformation — creating change at every level.

04

Learning & Adaptation

We build monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems into every program. We document what works, iterate on what doesn't, and share lessons openly with the development community.

Ready to Build Resilience Together?

Whether you're a funder, partner, or community champion — there's a place for you in this work.

Integrated Programs for Lasting Community Resilience

Each program tackles a critical dimension of vulnerability. Together, they form a comprehensive framework for transformation — one that is community-led, evidence-based, and designed to last.

🌿 Climate Change & Adaptation

Protecting Communities from the Climate Crisis

The Problem: Communities across Africa are experiencing the sharpest edges of climate change — prolonged droughts, flash floods, unpredictable seasons, and land degradation. Smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and urban poor populations have the least capacity to adapt, yet are hit hardest and fastest.

What We Do: RCA builds community climate resilience through environmental education, climate-smart agriculture training, natural resource management, and the establishment of local Climate Resilience Hubs — spaces where communities access tools, expertise, and peer networks to adapt and thrive.

Climate Resilience Hubs

Community-level knowledge centers equipped with climate information services, training facilities, and resource libraries. Each hub is community-managed and serves as a nerve center for local adaptation planning.

Climate-Smart Agriculture Training

Practical farmer-to-farmer training in drought-resistant crops, soil conservation, water harvesting, and agroforestry — integrating indigenous knowledge with modern climate science.

Environmental Literacy Campaigns

Community-wide awareness programs on climate change causes, impacts, and solutions — building a critical mass of informed citizens who demand climate action from their leaders.

Pilot Phase Results (2025)

  • 5,000 community members trained in climate adaptation practices
  • 3 Climate Resilience Hubs established in pilot counties
  • 25% improvement in household food security among participants
  • 100 hectares of degraded land restored through community action

Scaling Goal by 2028: 50,000+ members, 15 hubs

♀️ Women Empowerment & Leadership

Women at the Centre of Community Resilience

The Problem: Women bear the heaviest burden of the climate crisis — as primary food producers, water collectors, and caregivers — yet remain systematically excluded from the planning and policy spaces that determine how communities respond. Without gender equity, climate resilience is impossible.

What We Do: RCA invests in women's leadership from household to national level — through economic empowerment, civic education, leadership training, and structured pathways into decision-making roles in climate governance, local government, and community institutions.

Women's Leadership Academy

A structured, multi-month program training women community leaders in advocacy, financial literacy, governance participation, and climate policy engagement.

Economic Empowerment & Green Livelihoods

Supporting women's savings groups, cooperatives, and green enterprises — building economic independence as the foundation of political and social agency.

Gender-Responsive Climate Advocacy

Equipping women to engage in county climate planning, community development committees, and national policy dialogues with confidence and credibility.

Pilot Phase Results (2025)

  • 500 women trained through the Women's Leadership Academy pilot
  • 30% increase in women's participation in community governance
  • 100 women-led green enterprises supported and mentored

Scaling Goal by 2028: 5,000 women, 1,000 enterprises

🎓 Youth Engagement & Leadership

Africa's Youth as Architects of Resilience

The Problem: Africa's youth — representing over 60% of the population — face a double injustice: they will live longest with the consequences of the climate crisis, yet have the least say in the policies shaping their future. Without structured opportunities, youth energy remains untapped or directed toward frustration rather than transformation.

What We Do: RCA channels youth innovation, energy, and digital fluency into climate advocacy, civic leadership, and green entrepreneurship. We build a generation of informed, skilled, and connected young leaders ready to drive change from the grassroots to the global stage.

Youth Climate Action Corps

Trained youth ambassadors deployed in communities to lead environmental education, peer mobilization, and local climate action campaigns.

Green Innovation & Entrepreneurship Programme

Incubating youth-led green businesses and social enterprises — from renewable energy solutions to sustainable agriculture and waste management startups.

Civic & Climate Leadership Training

Structured training in public speaking, policy engagement, community organizing, and digital advocacy — building the next generation of African climate leaders.

Pilot Phase Results (2025)

  • 1,000 young people engaged as trained climate ambassadors
  • 50 youth-led green enterprises incubated and supported
  • Youth representatives in 40% of community climate structures

Scaling Goal by 2028: 10,000 youth, 500 enterprises

📋 Policy Advocacy & Research

Turning Community Voices Into Policy Change

The Problem: Africa's climate policies are designed far from the communities they affect. Technical jargon, exclusionary processes, and poor data collection mean that grassroots realities rarely inform national action plans or international climate commitments. The policy gap is a justice gap.

What We Do: RCA bridges the gap between community experience and policy action — conducting community-led research, producing accessible policy briefs, and building advocacy coalitions that ensure vulnerable communities have a seat at every table that matters.

Community-Led Research Programme

Training community researchers to document climate impacts, adaptation innovations, and policy gaps — generating locally-grounded evidence that informs advocacy.

Policy Dialogue & Coalition Building

Convening multi-stakeholder dialogues that bring community representatives into direct engagement with government officials, legislators, and development partners.

Climate Justice Media & Communications

Producing compelling stories, data visualizations, and advocacy materials that make community voices impossible to ignore in public discourse and policy spaces.

Pilot Phase Results (2025)

  • 5 community-led research reports published
  • Climate provisions integrated into 2 county development plans
  • 50 community advocates trained in policy engagement

Scaling Goal by 2028: 20 reports, 5 counties, 200 advocates
